REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT, MARY ROBINSON, ON THE OCCASION OF INFORMAL MEETING

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT, MARY ROBINSON, ON THE OCCASION OF INFORMAL MEETING WITH MEMBERS OF COMMITTEE OF THE REGIONS.

Mr. President,

Distinguished Members of the Committee,

Thank you for your warm welcome.

I am very happy to meet with you and with so many of the Members of the Committee of the Regions.

Your Committee is one of the youngest bodies of the European Union. It is also entrusted by the Treaty on European Union with a very important role - that of representing and giving expression to the interests of Europe's regions in the process of European construction.

The Committee of the Regions has already established an effective organisation and you are undertaking a heavy workload.

I am aware of and appreciate the Committee's support for the Peace Process in Northern Ireland. Its contribution to fostering peace and reconciliation is a testament to the value and importance of having, at European level, a dedicated corps of public figures who are profoundly aware of the hopes and aspirations of all our citizens.

I wish you every success in your future work.
