REMARKS BY PRESIDENT ROBINSON ON INFORMAL MEETING WITH MEMBERS OF THE EUROPEAN INVESTMENT BANK

REMARKS BY PRESIDENT ROBINSON ON INFORMAL MEETING WITH MEMBERS OF THE EUROPEAN INVESTMENT BANK, 16 MAY 1995

Chairman,

Distinguished Members,

I am very pleased to be with you today.

Since its establishment, the European Investment Bank has had a major impact on the construction of Europe.  Through its contacts with the market, the Bank is ideally placed to assist in carrying out the priority objectives of the Union.

The Bank's excellent performance and the innovative way you have responded to new challenges have been impressive.  For example, the European Investment Bank plays a key role, in co-operation with the EBRD and other international financial institutions, in supporting infrastructural development in central and eastern Europe.

Ireland attaches importance to your valuable work within and outside the Union.  The Bank's total lending to Ireland since our accession to the European Community in 1973, amounting to some £3.3 billion, has played an important role in our infrastructural development.

I wish the Bank and its members continued success in their work.
