Appointment of Fergus Lenihan as the Director Designate of the Edinburgh International Festival

The announcement by the Council of the Edinburgh International Festival that they have appointed Fergus Linehan as the Director Designate of the Edinburgh International Festival and that he will be producing the 2015 Festival, is a matter for celebration by all those who are familiar with his talent and immense contribution at national and international level.
Mar Uachtarán na hÉireann, as President of Ireland, I congratulate Fergus Linehan and pay tribute to the manner in which, through excellence in the arts, he has done so much to enhance the reputation of Ireland – for example, through his work on the Dublin Theatre Festival at home; on the Sydney Festival in Australia and in so many other places.
His commissioning of new work by Irish writers, composers and choreographers is one of the generous characteristics he has brought to all his work and I am sure that it will serve him well in this new project, preparation for which, I understand, begins next month.
