On 4 July, President Higgins formally opened the biennial conference of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.
In his speech, the President spoke of the rise of the 'precariat' and work insecurity, as well as the role of trade unions in combating rising populism.

The third Garden Party hosted by President and Sabina this summer was a "Family Day".
People from all over Ireland were invited as guests of honour at this event, held to pay tribute to the love, friendship and solidarity that binds us together as people and as a nation.
The annual Garden Parties at Áras an Uachtaráin continue a tradition which began during Douglas Hyde’s presidency. President and Sabina Higgins are organising eight such events this summer, welcoming some 4,000 people into Áras an Uachtaráin.

On 20 June 2017, President and Sabina Higgins hosted a delegation from the Choctaw Nation.
The Choctaw, who lost a quarter of their population on the 'Trail of Tears' in the 1830s, just a few short years later collected money to donate to the victims of the Famine in Ireland.

The President and Sabina invited people from islands communities across Ireland, as well as from organisations and institutions that support, or relate to, island life.

Twenty years after visiting as Minister for Arts, President Higgins returned to Shekina Garden in Glenmalure.
President Higgins was Minister for the Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht when Catherine McCann gifted the Shekina Garden to the State, a transfer which the President (then Minister) formalised on the occasion of a visit to Shekina in 1997.
This visit was, in fact, one of the last duties the President performed on his final day as a member of cabinet.
The exhbition of art in the Garden includes works of the late Fred Conlon, Sculptor.

President Higgins opened Bord Bia’s "Bloom" event, in Dublin's Phoenix Park.
The annual Bloom festival is Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family festival.
The President visited a large number of show gardens and delivered a speech to formally open the festival. In his speech, the President paid tribute to the festival organisers and spoke of the importance of sustainable food production for both our economy and our health and well-being.

President Higgins visited Dun Laoghaire to launch the programme of events celebrating the harbour’s 200th anniversary.
Construction of the harbour began in 1815 and the foundation stone for the harbour's new granite piers was laid in 1817. In his speech marking the 200th anniversary of the harbour, the President focused on the changing nature of the harbour and the society around it, and thanked all those involved in the harbour's preservation and operation.

The President met with members of the InterAction Council.
The Council was established to mobilise the experience, energy and international contacts of a group of former President and Prime Ministers, to develop recommendations and practical solutions for the political, economic and social problems confronting humanity.

The President of Ireland was the guest of honour in Abbeyleix at an event to mark National Biodiversity Week.
President Higgins attended one of the many events being organised in the context of the Biodiversity Week. The event highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism and paid tribute to the volunteers and organisations working to restore Abbeyleix Bog and other wetlands around the country.
