President Michael D. Higgins received a ceremonial welcome in the grounds of the Presidential Palace in Hanoi. 

The President and Sabina Higgins were greeted by President Tran Dai Quang and his spouse, Madame Nguyen Thi Hien, and flowers were presented by two children. The national anthems of Ireland and Vietnam were played, before both Presidents reviewed a Guard of Honour.
