On Monday, 28 September 2015, President Michael D. Higgins gave the 11th Annual Emile Noël Lecture at the New York University School of Law on the subject of establishing economic fluency in Europe.
In this speech, entitled 'The European Union - Towards a Discourse of Reconnection, Renewal and Hope', the President provide a critique of neoliberal capitalism and “extreme market theory”, warning of potential risks to democracy at a time of deep political and economic crisis.
