President Michael D. Higgins began his visit to Scotland on 27 June, accompanied by his wife, Sabina Higgins, and by Minister of State Joe McHugh T.D. representing the Government.

The visit was the President’s second visit to Scotland as President of Ireland; the previous visit took place in July 2013, when the President attended the commemorations marking the 1450th anniversary of the establishment of the monastery of St. Colmcille on Iona.

The first stop during the visit was at the Govanhill Neighbourhood Centre in Glasgow, where the President met representatives of Irish community groups in the city.
