Statement by President Michael D. Higgins on the landslides in Colombia

Date: Sat 1st Apr, 2017 | 21:08

President Michael D. Higgins has written to the President of the Republic of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, to express his sympathies to the victims of the landslides in the Putumayo region, to their families and to all those affected by the tragedy.

NOTES FOR THE EDITORS:

President Higgins recently made an Official Visit to Colombia, during which he had bilateral meetings with President Santos. The Presidents discussed a number of issues, including the work of Roger Casement, who worked in the Putumayo region, during a period in the early 20th century.

Roger Casement's work was also the focus of President Higgins's keynote address in Lima, as the region was part of Peru at the time. The President's speech is available at http://www.president.ie/media-library/speeches/keynote-address-at-the-peruvian-ministry-of-foreign-affairs

Earlier this month, the President also wrote to the President of the Republic of Peru, following the floods in coastal Peru, in which tens of thousands of people lost their homes.
