Remarks by President Mary McAleese at the announcement of the Eircell GAA All Stars Awards

Remarks by President Mary McAleese at the announcement of the Eircell GAA All Stars Awards on FRIDAY, 4th December 1998

The GAA All Stars Awards are the most prestigious awards in Gaelic sport - and are eagerly awaited each year by both players and the general public alike.

Since 1971 over 800 players have been honoured – and I would like to pay tribute to all of those recipients - to thank them for the many moments of excitement and enjoyment they have given to so many people.

It is the ambition of every player to receive an ‘All Star Award’ – and to be selected as a nominee is itself a great honour. But to receive an award is a tremendous accolade to the achievement of excellence in Gaelic Games – more than compensating for the commitment, dedication and the many hours of training in all types of weather, demanded of today’s top players.

I would like to pay tribute to the Gaelic Athletic Association for the tremendous work they have done in building up community spirit and loyalty among young people – and for creating a forum for all generations to enjoy each others’ company. It starts in the parish – and ends up here before the nation.

I would like also to acknowledge the generous sponsorship by Eircell, who have formed a very successful partnership with the GAA in these awards – and also to pay tribute to the professionalism of the adjudication panel, who were saddled with the unenviable task of making the final decision.

I congratulate all of this year’s nominees and award winners on their remarkable achievements in their sport. As role models you give inspiration and encouragement to so many young players in local clubs all over the island of Ireland.
