REMARKS BY MARY McALEESE ON THE OCCASION OF THE VISIT TO ST. OLIVER PLUNKETT PRIMARY SCHOOL

REMARKS BY PRESIDENT MARY McALEESE ON THE OCCASION OF THE VISIT TO ST. OLIVER PLUNKETT PRIMARY SCHOOL, FORKHILL, NEWRY

I am delighted to be here today in South Armagh and in this lovely school.

I congratulate the Principal, Ciaran Mackin, the teachers and the Board of Governors for the great effort they have made to provide such a high standard of education in this small village.

I know that there have been difficulties and that some of these still remain today. I congratulate the parents, the teachers and the many supporters of the school for your courage and determination during what must have seemed at times like an impossible struggle.

I know that this school is seen as the focal point in the community and through the school and other community agencies, you are making great efforts to improve community spirit in the locality.

I have heard of your Partnership Drama Programme which is an excellent example of co-operation between local senior citizens and the school. I hope that your forthcoming drama production will be a great success.

It was a great pleasure for me to welcome a group from this school to Áras an Uachtaráin earlier this year. I hope you enjoyed your day in Dublin and I look forward to welcoming you again on some future occasion.
