Statement from Áras an Uachtaráin

Date: Thu 1st May, 2014 | 14:12

President Higgins described their meeting as “warm, fruitful and practical”.

Amongst other items the President and the Mayor discussed immigration reform and issues affecting the estimated 50,000 undocumented Irish citizens in the United States. They also discussed Northern Ireland, the decade of commemorations and the recent State visit to the UK.

Much of the discussion focussed on culture; in particular, plans by the Art Institute of Chicago for a major exhibition of Irish objects to open on 17th March 2015, and possible events in Chicago to commemorate 1916.

The President’s second official visit to the U.S. continues tomorrow when he will receive an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from his alma mater Indiana University in Bloomington.
