President Michael D. Higgins today offered congratulations to former President Mary Robinson on her appointment as United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Change saying:
“I wish to warmly congratulate former President Mary Robinson on her appointment as United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Change, which is also a great honour for Ireland.
Climate change, climate justice and its impact on our environment are amongst the most pressing issues of our time. This appointment clearly recognises not only the importance of sustaining the planet and caring for the environment but also the significant issue of inter-generational justice.
Mary Robinson is an ideal choice for such a significant role. She brings to her new task great experience in the field of human rights and diplomacy, her ability to tackle the challenges in Africa’s Great Lakes Region as well as her skills in bringing together global leaders to tackle a common cause. I wish former President Robinson the very best in this vital work which has the potential to benefit citizens worldwide.”
