Date: Thu 12th Jan, 2017 | 14:32

“I have written to the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Joachim Gauck, to convey my condolences to the people of Germany on the death of former President Roman Herzog.

Throughout his public life, Roman Herzog advocated for justice and the rule of law and his efforts to ensure the lessons learned from the darkest period in German history were heeded have left a legacy not just for Germany but for all of Europe, reminding us of the fragility and preciousness of democracy and inclusion.

As President of the Federal Republic, Roman Herzog was widely seen as a voice of conscience and a leader.

Sabina and I wish to express our deepest sympathies to his family and to the German nation.
